Risk management is a growing area of employment with
tremendous career prospects and risk specialists can
now be found in various management positions working
in a wide range of organisations in both the private
and public sectors:
- medium to large-sized commercial and industrial
organisations;
- local authorities;
- educational institutions;
- manufacturing companies;
- insurance companies;
- banks and other financial institutions.
- Specialist risk consultancies are also on the rise
and these offer risk management specialists the
opportunity to move into the lucrative area of
consultancy.
- Self-employment/freelance work is a viable option
on a consultancy basis, although considerable experience
and expertise would be required.
Risk management specialists are well prepared to be
decision makers and assume leadership roles in their
organization. In large organisations there will be
scope for lateral and vertical move internally to
other senior management positions. Progression may
require moves between organisations. The rise of new
uncertainties and the resulting new corporate
governance requirements have given risk management
specialists a higher profile within organisations
giving them a competitive edge over their colleagues.
To quote Warren Buffet:
'In future It is expected that a risk professional
to be a prominent member of many boards in the shape
of a chief risk officer or director of risk, assuming
a visionary role and imparting risk management
strategies and skills to senior managers across
all divisions.'
